Common Myna

This is one more urbanized bird. Their adaptation is helping the species to flourish in large numbers.

Scientific name: - Acridotheris Tristis.

Common myna has a dark brown colored body with few black and white patches near the tail end. The inner aspect of wings display clear white stripes, appreciated well when the bird is in flight mode. Head region is black or blackish brown. Beak and legs are yellowish. There is an yellow stripe below and behind the eyes which helps to easily identify the common myna from Jungle myna. The yellow stripe makes its eyes look fierce.

Probably common myna has forgotten the art of nesting! They make nest from anything or in anything. Burrows in palm/ coconut trees, space between the thatched roof and walls, chimneys, pipes laid in highway under bridges.... they literally build their nest at all places which they feel is habitable.

It is said that myna couples remain so for lifetime, strictly no adultery. It is very rare to see a lonely myna. Couple will roam together.

Grains, insects, some food thrown by man forms their main staple. During breeding season they carry tens of insects in their beaks to feed little ones.

Even if you don't see other species of birds in your environment common myna 'must' be present, for sure. If even Myna is missing near you then just make sure that your living environment is habitable!

The photo of common myna was clicked during evening golden hours, at golden temple, bailukuppe, Karnataka. Rays of sun sparkled the yellow beak of common myna and turned it golden. In later days I have taken many more images of common myna from much closer distance with much clearer details but I love this image for that golden sparkle.

Birds of Karnataka: Purple sunbird

Dr Ashok K R
We don't have humming birds in our country, instead we have various varieties of sunbirds. Purple sunbird is most common variety.
Scientific name: - Cinnyris asiaticus
Purple sunbird is about the size of a sparrow. It feeds mainly on nectar, to facilitate this they have slightly bent beak. The name purple sunbird is because of male birds color. When we see it from a distance, when we see the bird perched in shadow it appears black in color. When bathed in sun we can appreciate that the head and upper part of the body is purplish, not black.  ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಲು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ಲಿಕ್ಕಿಸಿ
